Documents required for legal plates

For every road-legal plate order — Standard 2D, 4D or specialised — we need evidence of your name and address and your entitlement to the registration. You do not need to complete a customer form.

Your legal plates will not be dispatched until we have received and verified the required documents.

1. Confirm your name and address

Choose suitable original evidence from the following. The documents supplied must confirm both your name and address.

  • Driving licence (with or without a photograph; UK or overseas)
  • Electricity, gas, water or landline telephone bill, Council Tax bill or Northern Ireland rates bill, issued within the last six months
  • Bank or building society statement issued within the last six months
  • National identity card issued by a government outside the UK

A passport, bank or building society debit/credit card, police warrant card or armed forces identity card can confirm your name only. You will also need acceptable evidence of your address.

2. Confirm entitlement to the registration

Provide one suitable original entitlement document:

  • Vehicle registration certificate (V5C)
  • Green new keeper slip (V5C/2)
  • Certificate of entitlement (V750)
  • Retention document (V778)
  • Vehicle tax or SORN renewal reminder (V11)
  • Temporary registration certificate (V379)
  • Number plate authorisation certificate (V948), with an official DVLA stamp, or an electronic authorisation certificate (eV948 or eV948/2)
  • Authorisation letter from a lease/hire company or fleet operator quoting the V5C document reference number
  • Vehicle details PDF from the View Vehicle Record service for a fleet where the V5C has been suppressed, quoting the V5C document reference number
  • Trailer registration certificate (VTRC)

For an insurance-approved repair, contact us about providing the insurer’s name, reference and policy numbers.
